Western Carolina 2008 Catamount Football Schedule
Cullowhee, N.C. - Game times for all of Western Carolina's 12 football games have been set for the 2008 season. WCU will play three times under the lights, with the bulk of the schedule slated for afternoon kickoffs. (All times are subject to change).
Also, the deadline to renew 2008 Catamount Football season tickets is rapidly approaching with a cut-off date slated for July 1. After that date, all seats will be released to the general public for season ticket sales.
Western Carolina will open the Dennis Wagner era under the lights at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field at 7:00 pm on Thursday, Aug. 28 by hosting Shorter College. The game is scheduled for a WCU Faculty/Staff Appreciation night with special ticket incentives for WCU employees.
Week two pits the Catamounts against the Bobby Bowden-led Florida State Seminoles, the third all-time meeting between the two squads and first since 1985. Kickoff from Doak S. Campbell Stadium is set for 6:00 pm.
WCU's final scheduled night game will be under the lights on Saturday, Sept. 13 as the Liberty Flames make their first Cullowhee appearance since 2001, a 63-0 shutout victory for the Catamounts.
The month of September closes with consecutive road contests in the Palmetto State. Western visits Presbyterian out of the Big South at 1:30 pm on Sept. 20 before opening SoCon play at The Citadel one week later at Johnson Hagood Stadium. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Catamounts is slated for 1:00 pm in Charleston.
October opens with the annual Homecoming game as Western Carolina welcomes the conference's newest member, Samford, to Whitmire Stadium/Waters Field. The Bulldogs officially join the SoCon next season and will contend for the conference title. The first-ever conference match-up between WCU and Samford is set for Oct. 4 with a 1:00 pm kickoff in Cullowhee.
The monthly slate continues with back-to-back road games in the upstate of South Carolina as WCU will visit Furman (Oct. 11 at 2:00 pm) and Wofford (Oct. 18 at 1:00 pm) in consecutive weeks before welcoming the Georgia Southern Eagles to Cullowhee to wrap-up the month on Oct. 25 with a 1:00 pm on WCU Family Weekend.
The Catamounts have three scheduled games in November with an open date sandwiched in between. WCU will honor its latest Hall of Fame class on Friday, Oct. 31, the night before the annual Hall of Fame game as the Catamounts host Chattanooga on Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm at Whitmire Stadium/Waters Field.
The following week, Western visits Elon on Nov. 8 for the Phoenix homecoming game at 1:30 pm before hosting arch-rival Appalachian State in the annual "Battle for the Old Mountain Jug" in Cullowhee on Nov. 22. It will be the 33rd time the Old Mountain Jug will be up for grabs in the gridiron grudge match Sports Illustrated once deemed "the best football rivalry you've never heard of."
Kickoff between Western and Appalachian will be at 1:00 pm.
Back in April, Western Carolina announced ticketing changes for the 2008 season, which includes the switching of the home sideline back to the East Side and making E.J. Whitmire Stadium completely reserved seating, eliminating the general admission sections. With that change in mind, fans are encouraged to purchase their season tickets to ensure they have the same seat for all six, exciting home games.
With the sideline change, there will be Catamount Club sections designated on both sides of the stadium to offer loyal donors the chance to have the best of either side they choose.
According to WCU Ticket Manager, Tracy Linville, sales for the '08 season are up from this time one year ago. Fans can purchase season tickets by calling the WCU Ticket Office at (800) 34-GOWCU, or by logging onto CatamountSports.com.
